About Paper Sculpture

My fascination with paper began in early childhood when I first learned to fashion paper chains and sailboats. It has continued throughout my lifetime and has culminated in many interesting and challenging 3D paper sculptures. With today’s computer technology & electronic cutting plotters I am able to design and precision cut all the various components to create items that would normally be extremely labor intensive to produce. The various parts to each sculpture are first computer designed/engineered to exact measurements ensuring that all will fit together without distortion. The created files (Scaleable Vector Graphics) are then sent to a cutting machine which cuts all of the pieces and includes perforated score lines. After folding the scores the various the sections are assembled/glued and then finalized with the addition of a variety of decorative embellishments. For the preliminary geometric understructures an 80 lb. cardstock is used. This is then overlaid with various decorative papers…plain, textured, patterned, embossed, foiled, glittered etc. Embellishments might include braids, trims, lace, sequins, rhinestones, paints etc. Although made from paper & cardstock each piece has been designed with a degree of durability for long lasting enjoyment. The majority of my 3d paper works are ‘one of a kind’ although I may reproduce the same design but with an entirely different look or feel to it. The end results are a unique and imaginative 3D paper scuplture suitable for functional use along with seasonal, party and decorative décor.
