Silk painting has been a specialty of mine for over 30 years. My hand painted fashion scarves and décor accessories have graced some of the nation’s finest department and specialty stores. Works on silk, including framed paintings and wall hangings, are constantly being created on commission and also distributed to galleries and shops. The technique I employ for my work is known in French silk painting circles as "gutta serti". It is a comprehensive procedure that can yield spectacular colors and results utilizing dyes especially formulated for silk. It all starts with a drawing/design that is traced onto silk which has been stretched taut on a frame. A resist agent (gutta) is used to outline the design and control/contain the spread of dyes. Many special effects can be achieved and the process is not unlike water color painting. After finalizing the painting, it is steamed for several hours to permanently set the colors making then washfast and drycleanable. The painted silks can then be fashioned into wall hangings, scarves, pillows, garments etc. No other medium can achieve the same shimmer/brilliance of color and diversity of effects that Silk Painting offers. For my work I use some of the finest silks in the world along with superior French dyes and a unique resist imported from New Zealand. The majority is one-of-a-kind paintings, scarves etc. with very limited editions coming in as a second. Lately I have also been offering digital & Giclee prints of my work on a variety of substrates and objects.
